The Ocracoke Island ferry / Cedar Island Ferry ride is one of the longer NC ferry rides, but it is also one of the most popular. If you are a vacationer going to Cape Hatteras or other parts of the NC Outer Banks, this ferry ride will most likely be the first on your journey to a relaxing time on the NC Outer Banks to do some saltwater fishing or boating.

Passengers are encouraged to call the NCDOT Ferry Division's 24-hour information line, 1-800 BY FERRY (293-3779), for up-to-date schedule information, and 511, the state's free travel information hotline, for road conditions.


You will need to secure a reservation several weeks in advance. In addition, you must be onhand 30 minutes prior to departure time or the reservation will be cancelled.

The Cedar Island terminal is about 45 miles east of Beaufort NC, but you should allow an hour and a half for the trip since you will be going through some small towns.
